bullet What is a Standardized Certificate?

Ans. A Standardized Certificate (sometimes referred to as an Interprovincial Certificate) is earned as a result of a candidate attempting and successfully passing Standardized Power Engineering Examinations in any Province or Territory in Canada.  The Standardized Certificate is similar in appearance to a Provincial Certificate however the Standardized Certificate usually includes an Interprovincial Seal (red in color).

bullet Is my Standardized Certificate good in any Province or Territory?

Ans. Yes.  As an example, if you have a Third Class Standardized Certificate (Red Seal) from Newfoundland, and you relocate to Saskatchewan, you must apply to Saskatchewan for a Saskatchewan Third Class Standardized Certificate. There will not be any examinations associated with receiving the Saskatchewan Certificate.

bullet What do I need if I relocate?

Ans. As an example, you are relocating from Nova Scotia to Alberta because you plan to work in Alberta. (You must bring your Standardized Nova Scotia Certificate and an application letter from the Nova Scotia Jurisdiction which indicates that your Certificate is valid, and present it to the Alberta Jurisdiction.)  You must prove that your certificate is valid, Alberta will then contact Nova Scotia for the required information, and this may take several weeks.  Once all is in order, you are eligible to purchase a new Alberta Standardized Certificate.

bullet If I go to work in a different Province or Territory, do I need a Certificate from the new Province or Territory?

Ans.
  Yes, you must make application for a Certificate from the Jurisdiction where you are employed.

bullet Where do I write Examinations?

Ans. You must write examinations in the Jurisdiction where you are employed.  If you are unemployed, you may write examinations in the Jurisdiction where you reside.  However in either case, you must meet the Regulatory requirements for the examination in the Jurisdiction where you apply to write.

bullet If I change jobs or relocate, can I write some examination papers in one Jurisdiction and some in another?

Ans. Yes. The marks from your original examinations can be forwarded to the new Jurisdiction.  You will get credit according to the Regulations governing the new Jurisdiction.

bullet If I relocate to a new Province or Territory, what rules apply to me?

Ans. You must get a copy of the Acts and Regulations which apply to the new Jurisdiction and become familiar with them.  You are subject to and must abide by those Acts and Regulations.  If you are going to work there, you must make application to, and receive a Certificate from, that Jurisdiction.

bullet Can I get my examination results over the telephone?

Ans. No.  The Jurisdiction (examiner) cannot provide confidential information over the telephone or fax.  The examination results are mailed to a home address.  However, in some Jurisdictions, you may appear in person and produce picture ID to obtain examination results.

bullet If I have a Provincial (not a standardized) Certificate can I get the same Class of Certificate if I relocate to a new Province or Territory?

Ans. You may or may not receive the same Class Certificate.  It depends on the Regulations or policy of individual Jurisdictions.  Contact the applicable Jurisdiction and discuss.
