On September 1, 2006, the Revised First Class Power Engineer Examination Syllabus will become effective and the new examinations will be available.
A comparison between the Old and Revised First Class syllabus is available at www.sopeec.org. The change is so substantial that examination papers already successfully completed in the Old First Class syllabus cannot be integrated into the Revised First Class syllabus.
A 6 month transition period will start on September 1, 2006, and end on February 28, 2007. During this transition period, all applicants will have the option of starting examinations under either the old syllabus or the revised syllabus. By March 1, 2007, all applicants who have not successfully completed at least one examination paper under the old syllabus will only be able to write their examinations under the revised syllabus.
Starting September 1, 2006, both the Old and Revised First Class examination will be concurrently available for 5 years. By the end of August 2011, the Old First Class syllabus will be removed. This will give examination candidates, who have qualified to continue under the Old First Class syllabus, ample time to finish their examinations and earn their certificate.
Examination candidates who have passed one or more examination papers on the old syllabus have asked if they can switch to the revised syllabus. The answer is yes, however, the candidates will lose the examination papers that they have successfully passed. A number of these candidates have decided to switch to the revised syllabus based on the fact that the Revised First Class syllabus has a broader and more practical knowledge base such as safety loss and environmental program management, inspection, maintenance and repair practices and business and workforce management. Such knowledge will equip the first class power engineer with the necessary knowledge to make better decisions in dealing with their work responsibilities.
Due to the change of scope of the Revised First Class syllabus, candidates writing the Revised 1B1 examination paper will require knowledge in ASME Section IX and Part UW of ASME Section VIII Div.1, ASME/ANSI B31.1 Pressure Piping and B31.3 Process Piping codes. A set of ASME code books will be provided in certain major examination centres until the ASME Academic Extract produced by PanGlobal provides the additional information.
