REVISED FIRST CLASS

First Class Examinations

An examination candidate should contact the applicable jurisdiction for specific application information. Each jurisdiction may coordinate its examinations differently. Examination questions for 1st class examinations are all essay, narrative, sketch and describe, calculation or Code type questions.

In all jurisdictions, obtaining a 1st class certificate of competency requires successful completion of 8 examinations. Each of the A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, B3, and B4 examinations are comprised of 7 questions worth 20 marks each. The candidate must choose the 5 that he/she wishes to attempt. If over 5 questions are attempted only the first 5 questions attempted will be marked.

To pass a 1st Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency examination, a candidate must obtain at least 65% of the total marks allotted for each examination paper.

In most jurisdictions, 1st class examinations are 3.5 hours in length.

Code questions for the 1st class may be provided in either Imperial or metric (SI). In most jurisdictions, the candidate is responsible for providing the required code books.

All code questions will be built to the 2007 ASME Code. While older codes may be allowed in the examination room, all answers will be to the 2007 Code.
