REVISED SECOND CLASS

Second Class Examinations

Examination of New 2nd Class Syllabus Topic on Corrosion

It is suggested that candidates contact the applicable jurisdiction for specific application information. Each jurisdiction may coordinate its applications for examination differently. Examination questions for 2nd class examinations are currently transitioning from long answer to multiple choice style questions.

In all jurisdictions obtaining a 2nd class certificate of competency requires successful completion of 6 examinations 2A1, 2A2, 2A3, 2B1, 2B2, and 2B3.

In most jurisdictions 2nd class examinations are 3.5 hours in length. Effective January 1st, 2023, papers 2A1, 2A2, consist of seven (7) essay style questions of which five should be attempted. If more than five (5) questions are attempted, only the first (5) attempted will be marked.

Effective January 1st, 2023, the 2A3 paper will join the 2B1, 2B2, and 2B3 examination in the multiple choice format consisting of 100 questions each. Please check the “What’s New” section on the SOPEEC website at www.sopeec.org for more details.

To pass a 2nd Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency examination, a candidate must obtain at least 65% of the total marks allotted for each examination paper.

In most jurisdictions, the candidate is responsible for providing the required reference material. It is recommended that all reference material is current.

See General Examination Information for what some jurisdictions normally allow to be brought into the examination room by the candidate.
